| EDINBURGH LIFE A quick look at Ultimate What is it? Ultimate is the organised version of the game you may have played with your dog in the park on Sundays. You can call it Frisbee if you like, but that is only one type of 'plate'. How do you play it? Two teams of seven play on an area roughly the size of a football pitch. The last 25 yards are known as the 'endzone', with goals scored by passing the disc to a team-mate inside it. Similar to netball, you cannot run with the disc, and on receiving it you must release it within ten seconds. You lose possession if the plate touches the ground or if your opponent catches it. The only main rule is that your team has to have a silly name. Who are the top clubs in the country? Sneekys and Ro-sham-bo from Edinburgh, Mud Culture from Glasgow, Flying Sorcerers from St Andrews, Dundee's Shooting Stars and Petroleum from Aberdeen. These and other less esteemed players will meet up for a major two-day event at Meadowbank in February What is the ultimate in Ultimate? August sees 2,000 players descending on St Andrews for the World Championships. Two Scottish teams will be put forward for the event, comprising members of the existing teams. .Ultimate takes place on The Meadows every Sunday at 2pm. Cal1228 8534 for info. |
